¿Cómo puede una emisora de radio y televisión tener credibilidad si su jefa de notícias intenta engañar sobre su carrera?

For a federal broadcast network, there can be few more important transmissions than the inauguration of the country’s first black president. Especially if your No. 1 issue is participative democracy and your target audience is Cuba, a black majority nation.

Hence, it is hard to explain why the crew from Miami-based TV Martí sent to cover president Obama’s inauguration last year missed the occasion. For some reason, they arrived too late and improvised after the ceremony had concluded.

“They got there eventually, but the whole inauguration was over,” says Niurka Fernandez-Arteaga, a TV Martí production specialist. “They did tight shots. You never see the president in the background and the Capitol. They cut-and-pasted the video of the feed and evening shots. It’s like staging.”

It’s professional failings of this kind that have made Radio and TV Martí, the U.S. government’s effort to beam uncensored news into communist Cuba, the target of Congressional investigations - not to mention the butt of jokes in the media profession. TV Martí has such a minimal audience in Cuba that its detractors call it La TV Que No Se Ve, the TV that nobody watches.
