(WASHINGTON) –U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding news reports that the Florida children will return home. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“It is not surprising that criminals continue to see Cuba as a safe haven whenever they wish to flee U.S. law enforcement officials. Cuba is still considered a favorite for fugitives and wanted criminals as the regime does not afford the fundamental right of due process and instead violates human rights at every turn. “We cannot forget that Cuba is still harboring over 70 fugitives wanted by U.S. law enforcement officials, including Joanne Chesimard, who murdered a New Jersey State Trooper, and Victor Manuel Gerena, who is on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list for a brutal armed robbery in Connecticut. The Cuban regime also continues to harbor agents from Foreign Terrorist Organizations such as the FARC and the ETA. “The Castro brothers continue to be the puppeteers behind criminal and nefarious activities and the island remains a land ruled by lawbreakers.”
